The Yat/Bentley Centre for Performance is now enrolling for our Fall Term 2021!
In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, all classes are offered online via Zoom. Schedule A begins September 4th. Schedule B begins October 2nd.
There are course offerings for everyone, from beginners to advanced artists. Private sessions with Tom Bentley-Fisher and members of the YBC Teaching Company also available.
Tuition rates are listed in the class descriptions below. We are pleased to offer a limited number of scholarships; please Contact Us if you would like to learn more.
For new students we strongly recommend attending Everything Is Movement along with other classes. EiM can be taken asynchronously if needed and gives a strong foundation for the rest of the work.
New to Yat work? Take Everything is Movement and Self-Discovery.
Looking to integrate Yat with your previous acting training? Take Everything is Movement and Beginning the Excavation.
Both Muscularity 1 & 2 are year-long courses with the opportunity to show your work to the public in December and June.

SELF-DISCOVERY | FROM A DEEP TRUTH

If you are curious to explore new depths of the unknown on your journey towards character transformation, this class is for you! The course will give you tools to be completely free and creative in the moment. It will prepare you to fully experience the Yat/Bentley Method. Learn more.

Put your knowledge of the Yat/Bentley Method to immediate work as you expand and deepen your abilities through an intimate learning experience. Enrollment is limited to eight students per class - the class meets twice weekly over the course of the 2021-22 academic year.
Students in this course will be pushed to meet their resistances with confidence and imagination, as they experience:
The Inner Attitudes Notes — receive the notes initiated by Yat Malmgren and developed by YBC.
The Inner Attitudes — Through simultaneous exploration of monologues and original scenarios.
Active, Embodied Choices — Find the astonishing three-dimensionality of character using the four variations of each Inner Attitude.
Personalized Coaching — The YBC teaching company will craft a ‘tailor-made’ experience that builds on each student’s previous work, including one-on-one instruction.
Taught by Tom Bentley-Fisher (YBC Artistic Director) and Heidi Carlsen with Lavinia Hollands/Adam Kotin/Jocelyn Truitt (YBC Associate Artists), and with guest appearances from the YBC teaching company and community. Suitable only for those familiar with the Yat/Bentley Method.

Through examining the movement of our inner pathways of Sensing, Thinking, Intuiting, and Feeling, and exploring the seven spheres of inner movement, we begin to comprehend character and express ourselves in ways we never thought possible.
In this essential experiential course, you will receive an embodied understanding of the foundations of the Yat/Bentley Method. Learn to use the tools of:
The Swings - Physical exercises to develop the inner and outer lives of the performer.
Feldenkrais® and Awareness Through Movement® - Gentle, guided lessons that offer another portal to the unknown, to discovering effortlessness and animating the entire body.
Voice - Grounded in the work of Cicely Berry and evolved through the Yat/Bentley Method, uncover your voice through imaginative exploration of body and energy.

This course is designed to enrich students; preparing them to dig deeply and experience sensations that will allow them to more fully experience the work. This will translate into an economic, efficient, deep experience of the Yat/Bentley Method.
This class will explore the importance of coming from a place of deep truth and imagination through:
Identifying the inner sensations of Sensing, Thinking, Intuiting, and Feeling
Experiencing the activation of Intending, Attending, Deciding, and Adapting
Developing the manifestation of these energies through Weight, Space, Time, and Flow
Expanding the imagination and thoroughly investigating Actions, Objectives, Activities, and Physical and Psychological Motivation
Introducing you to the work of Laban and Jung through the Psychology of Movement initiated by Yat Malmgren and developed by Tom Bentley-Fisher

Discover openings to tap into your deeper truths as an artist. Identify sensations, develop energies and cultivate your imagination as you dig below the surface, allowing story and character to reveal themselves. Through improvisation and scene work, this class will give you keys to revealing your truth by:
Identifying, experiencing, and expanding hidden depths
Identifying your Inner Sensations of Sensing, Thinking, Intuiting, and Feeling
Developing the manifestation of these sensations and reservoirs
Experiencing the shifting of energies through the Pathways and the Spheres
Solo and duet improvisations using all of the above to gain artistic flexibility through letting go of unnecessary and inefficient habits, thereby finding freedom
Using personal reservoirs, imagination, imagery, the body and breath in relation to these Pathways and Spheres to experience the revelation of character

Students in this course will be challenged to work beyond their habits with confidence and imagination, as they create characters through:
The Notes — referencing both the Inner Attitude and Drives Notes to create nuanced characters with a strong inner life
Active, Embodied Choices — Find the astonishing three-dimensionality of character using the confluence of spheres and pathways
Explore Text through the specificity of the Yat/Bentley Method
Create Characters based on the Confluence of Drives
Public Performance — Each student will submit monologues or scenes for consideration to be performed publicly in December 2021.
